About Us

The Olaudah Equiano Institute, Inc.

We are a humanitarian and advocacy organization dedicated to empowering people of Hebrew (Ibiri) heritage in Africa and its diaspora. The Equiano Institute was created after ten years of Jewish and intercultural dialogues facilitated by a broad network of scholars and artists. We support Hebrew communities by providing general information to the public and promoting constructive discussions about issues affecting them.

Colleagues, Community & Friends

“I cannot forbear suggesting […] the strong analogy which even by this sketch, imperfect as it is, appears to prevail in the manners and customs of my countrymen and those of the Jews,[…]—an analogy, which alone would induce me to think that the one people had sprung from the other.”

— Olaudah Equiano

Our Inspiration

This institute is named after Olaudah Equiano because, despite being kidnapped, stolen, and trafficked as a child, he continued throughout his life to affirm the humanity and kinship he shared with all peoples, irrespective of their origins.

Equiano’s traumatic loss of family and freedom prompted him to famously document his life story for the cause of abolition. In honor of his efforts, we are equally committed to preserving and advancing all Hebrew peoples’ contributions to human liberation.
